Our Small World
We recently spent an afternoon with Daniela, a friend from West Virginia. She was visiting family and friends in Mexico who are themselves missionaries from her home country of Chile. It’s amazing how the circle of Christ’s followers is so intertwined in our small world.
It was a hopeless feeling…really. We stopped in at a KFC for a meal while our house was airing out from its latest fumigation. After placing the order I watched as money was shifted here and there and finally my change was giving. In my confusion, it dawned on me it was incorrect, or was it? I returned and tried to clear up their mistake. “I gave you more money.” It was a start but not enough to make my case; and even if I could, would it really help? Chalk it up to living in Mexico and not in a more “honest” society. On the other hand, I wonder how many Mexicans have handed their money over the counter in the U.S. only to be cheated out of most of it.
March the 21st was an interesting day - spring equinox. Here in Mexico it’s particularly celebrated at “sacred sites” such as Aztec pyramids. Indigenous beliefs and customs are on display as groups meet together to perform ancient ceremonies. Incense is raised to the sun and stars, and worship is given through sacred dances. Here’s the crazy thing - most of the people who perform these ceremonies aren’t indigenous all, but people from around the world who come to revive and participate in these ancient rites. It gives new meaning to the idea of “revival”.
We did something tonight we tell others never to do. We had a meal from one of the many street venders around town. It felt like a true Mexican experience as we sat at tables on the street with our Mexican friends, ate and laughed together, then talked long after the meal. The hamburgers and french-fries were the best! It was highly recommended and declared safe. We’ll just wait and see how it goes………….48 Hour Report: We are all doing fine. I guessed we dodged the bullet this time.

Ah man, I'm so jealous you ate at a street vendor. It will definately feel like a huge victory to me if y'all don't get sick (a victory over what? I'm not quite sure).

Ah, come on! If a street vendor's greasy food is cooked right in front of you and served fresh out of the deep friar, I say go for it! Then again, I have a gut of steel, trained by decades of world travel. :D

So glad Daniela made it to you guys- sad she beat me there though :-(
When I was in India, I'm pretty sure I was cheated for several months when I bought vegetables and fruits- they would use "weighted scales" and give me less than what I paid for.
There's some proverb about scales being in balance- It took me 3 months to understand why some time the vendors would hold up the empty scale first, and some wouldn't- over time, I would ask to see the empty scale.
